Happy Thanksgiving!

Nov
26

Happy Thanksgiving to all of my customers, colleagues, partners, vendors and friends in the I.T. World! I am thankful for faster computers, servers, networks and storage and so much more. Just think back a few years ago and how much things have changed. Virtual networking, virtual storage, SSD drives and large curved monitors. It's an existing time to be working in this field. Thanks to my customers for trusting me, thanks to my colleagues for letting me learn from you, thanks to my partners and vendors for working great deals with me. I appreciate all of you!

Why Snapshots Are Good - and Why They Are Bad

Nov

Anyone using hypervisors to virtualize their server infrastructure, is keenly aware of the snapshot feature. Yet most, don't really understand how they work. Snapshots are "point in time" backups of the server hard disks. I use the term backup as a reference only, as you should never use snapshots for backups. It's a bad practice. (Even though most backup software use snapshots to perform backups - more on this later in this post). When you first create a new virtual machine, you will have a virtual disk attached. In Windows, this would be your C: drive.

Surface Pro 3 as a Desktop Replacement

Nov

It finally happened. My 5 plus year old PC bit the dust. Now, I am not saying that I am cheap, but I really could not see myself buying another PC. I mean, we are in the laptop/tablet age now. Aren't we? So, I decided to see what I had laying around that might work as a replacement. A 2nd generation iPad perhaps? As much as I like the iOS operating system, using an iPad as a daily desktop replacement wasn't really feasible. Really, it wasn't. I would end up playing way too many games. How about my Android tablet? Nope.

Affordable Care Act - Not so Affordable

Nov
03

My blog may not always be based around technology. For me, a blog should be be what I am feeling or thinking today.

Case in point.

I voted for Obama and the democratic party. There, I said it. Have they done some good things? Yes. Have they done everything right? Hell no.

Now that I am 100% self employed, insurance is at the forefront of my to-do list.

Some facts about the so called Affordable Care Act.

Welcome to Geeksultant.com

Oct

I have been in the I.T. industry for over 30 years. During that time, as the internet came of age, I have had many websites. Each time my consulting business changed, so did my websites. Today, www.Geeksultant.com is the latest version of Kai Guettner, The Geeksultant. From my humble beginnings in Florence, South Carolina as ISC of Florence (short for Information Systems Consulting) and my first website, to today's Geeksultant.com, things have really changed. My first site, it was all html coding, line by line.
